Argan oil occupies an important position in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food domains. Because of its elevated price, argan oil is subjected to adulteration practices by industrial or commercial actors eager to increase profit margins. Therefore, methods to ascertain argan oil authenticity are actively looked for. The use of argan oil elements as authenticity markers has been evaluated. To identify distinctive markers of argan oil allowing the detection of adulteration, the element content of seven pairs of vegetable edible oils is analyzed by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP‐AES). For each pair, a plant is grown in Morocco and the other in a different country. Content of 12 metals in the resulting vegetable oil is determined and results are interpreted taking into account the soil element content. This study shows that soil element content frequently influences the oil element content but argan oil, which is necessarily prepared from roasted argan kernels, represents a special case since its tin content is much higher than in any other oils. Tin content is a useful marker to characterize argan oil and can be used to certify its authenticity. Practical Application: Tin content determination can be recommended as a possible specific marker to certify argan oil authenticity. This study demonstrates that such analysis is efficient to differentiate argan oil from six other common edible oils. Element content determination is performed over three consecutive years using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP‐AES) on seven different pairs of edible oils: argan, olive, sesame, mustard, corn, peanut, and sunflower oils. One member of the pair has been prepared from fruit or seeds grown in Morocco while the other one originated from a far removed location. Depending on the type of oil, differences in element content are observed but, remarkably, argan oil is the only oil presenting an elevated tin content that is confirmed by a bibliography search. Therefore tin content determination can be recommended as an additional method to certify argan oil authenticity.

The Maâmoura aquifer is located on the eastern coast of the Cap Bon peninsula. During recent decades, the agricultural exploitation of water has been strongly reinforced, causing an over-pumping of the groundwater resources accompanied by an intrusion of seawater. The geophysical approach based on electrical resistivity tomography has been adopted to obtain high-resolution electrical sections imaging, which allows delineatation of the areas characterized by a high salinization and reconstructs the geometry of the saline wedge front. In fact, the presence of seawater in the aquifers reduces subsurface resistivity values. In this study, five electrical profiles were performed using the Terrameter SAS4000 Lund Imaging System with an array of 64 electrodes. The Wenner configuration was used with a unit electrodes spacing of 5 m. Finally, we use hydrogeological data, and electrical resistivity tomography data superimposed with the location of wells to provide a conceptual framework for the understanding of the freshwater-saltwater interface in the Maâmoura region.

The hydrogeochemical and stable isotope compositions of aquitard porewater samples from three boreholes were investigated to determine the origin, salinization, and hydrochemical evolution of water in the North Jiangsu coastal plain, China. Three porewater groups were identified based on the water-bearing subsystems. The total dissolved solids (TDS) of porewater samples highly varied from 0.03 to 26.1 g/L. Molar Cl/Br ratios and 18 O and 2 H data indicate that the source of Group 1 salinized porewater was the Holocene seawater, whereas Group 3 salinized samples were probably related to the remnant palaeoseawater of the Late Pleistocene. Group 2 samples had low salinity (TDS < 1 g/L) and undetectable Br − concentrations, which were probably recharged during a colder period and without evidence of seawater involvement. The salinized porewater was likely diluted by freshwater, as evidenced by its depleted isotopes and low salinity relative to standard seawater. The ionic ratios and ionic deltas indicate that considerable waterrock interactions (e.g., cation exchange and mineral weathering) also accounted for the hydrochemical constituents of porewaters, and cation exchange seems to be more noticeable at low salinity.
