Salinity tolerance evaluation of barley germplasm for marginal soil utilization

Abstract: One greenhouse experiment was conducted to assess the tolerance to salinity and water deficit stresses of 184 barley varieties (breeding lines or registered varieties). Also, a 2-year field experiment was conducted to evaluate the growth and yield components of 16 of these varieties, representing tolerant, intermediate tolerant and susceptible ones, grown simultaneously in saline and non-saline soils. In the greenhouse, the K-means cluster analysis shown that 17 varieties were tolerant, 72 varieties intermedia… Show more

“…Moreover, with salinities beyond the tolerance limits of a plant species a complete inhibition of germination may occur. As confirmed by all genotypes of the medicinal species of the present study, the overall effect of the salt-induced osmotic and ionic stresses is a delay and depression in seed germination (De la Reguera et al, 2020;Dhima et al, 2021). This salt-induced delay and depression of germination was more serious in anise than in fennel and ajwain.…”

“…In modern times of global climate change challenging society and the conservation science, there are cumulative alarms surrounding the increasing human population and concerns on finding ways to enhance crop production to meet such demand [1,2]. Fertilizers are in authority for increasing crop yield by providing the essential nutrients for plants.…”

“…Barley is a cereal plant species belonging to the Triticeae tribe, being cultivated all over the world. Barley has a very flexible growth regime; it is often grown in a multitude of environments with considerable variability in reliable yields, particularly in the presence of adverse conditions ( Dhima et al., 2021 ; Tesfaye and Bayih, 2024 ). The crop has diverse uses, such as in the food and feed, pharmaceutical, and malting industries ( Geng et al., 2022 ).…”
