Salinity and hormone interactions in affecting growth, transpiration and ionic relations ofPhaseolus vulgaris

Abstract: Addition of either abscisic acid (ABA) or kinetin at 10 -6 M to salinized media (20 -120 mM NaCI) induced remarkable effects on growth of Phaseolus vulgaris plants. Whereas ABA inhibited the plant growth and the rate of transpiration, kinetin induced stimulation of both parameters. Moreover, ABA increased proline and phosphorus concentrations in the salinized plants whilst kinetin decreased them.ABA induced stimulation of the transport of K, Ca and CI from root to shoot, accumulation of K, Na and C1 in root ce… Show more

“…For estimation of elements, a known amount of dry mass was digested in concentrated HNO 3 and made up to volume with distilled water. K + and Na + concentrations were measured by flame emission spectrophotometry (Younis et al 1994).…”

“…Consistent with this, over-expression of AtNCED3, a key enzyme for ABA biosynthesis, increases Arabidopsis tolerance to drought resulting from reduced transpiration rate in leaves (Iuchi et al, 2001), but over-expression of ABA 8 ′ -hydroxylase decreases ABA levels and produces ABA-deficient phenotypes (Nitsch et al, 2009), indicating ABA homeostasis is crucial for plants to cope with water stress. On the other hand, ABA stimulates accumulation and transport of proline, betaine, Na + , K + , Ca 2+ and Cl 2 (Chen and Murata, 2002;Younis et al, 1994), which can strengthen tolerance of plants to drought or osmotic stress.…”

“…Determination of K + , Na + , Ca 2+ and Cd 2+ ions Sodium and K + cations were estimated by the flame photometer. Standard Na + and K + solutions with known concentrations were used to draw a standard curve against its atomic absorption (Younis et al 1994).…”
