Salicylic acid receptor NPR1 is involved in guard cell chitosan signaling

Abstract: Chitosan (CHT) induces stomatal closure and thus plays a crucial role in plants to adapt to the adverse environments. Our previous results of a SA-deficient mutant nahG suggest that endogenous salicylic acid (SA) is involved in the CHT signaling in guard cells. Here in order to make the involvement definite, we examined stomatal responses to CHT of another SA-deficient mutant, sid2, and an SA receptor mutant, npr1-3. The sid2 mutation impaired CHT-induced stomatal closure and reactive oxygen species production… Show more

“…Our preliminary study using BiFC analysis indicated that this might be the case in Arabidopsis (data not shown). A recent study found that NPR1 is involved in guard cell chitosan signaling (Prodhan et al, 2020). As we confirmed suppression of l ‐Glu‐dependent stomatal signaling in the npr1‐1 mutant, it may be that SRK2E/OST1 modifies the NPR1 functions controlled by l ‐Glu signaling.…”

“…Recently, a new mechanism was revealed that NPR1 facilitated its own expression by recruiting WRKY18 and CDK8 to the promoter of NPR1 , leading the increased expression of the PR gene ( Chen et al, 2019 ). NPR1 , as SA receptor, involved in the chitosan-induced stomata closure and thus played a vital role in adjust to the adverse environments in plants ( Prodhan et al, 2020 ). The proteins NPR3 and NPR4 bind SA and their function is transcriptional co-repressor and they are partly redundant in their function ( Fu et al, 2012 ).…”

“…Inducing the defense response can be achieved by plant defense inducers or elicitors, which modulate some responses in the plants [6], and chitosan is in this group. This polymer is recognized as a microbe-associated molecular template (MAMP) because its structure is very similar to that of fungal cell wall fragments [7].…”
