Salicylic acid functionalized silica-coated magnetite nanoparticles for solid phase extraction and preconcentration of some heavy metal ions from various real samples

Abstract: A method for the preconcentration of trace heavy metal ions in environmental samples has been reported. The presented method is based on the sorption of Cu(II), Cd(II), Ni(II) and Cr(III) ions with salicylic acid as respective chelate on silica-coated magnetite nanoparticles. Prepared adsorbent was characterized by XRD, SEM, BET and FT-IR measurements. The metals content of the sorbed complexes are eluted using 4.0 mL of 1.0 mol L-1 nitric acid. The influences of the analytical parameters including pH, amount … Show more

“…These appear to originate from the ligand molecule, and are characteristic of O-H stretching, the carboxylic acid (COO -) group, -N=N-stretching, phenol group vibrations and C-O stretching, respectively. 22 This supports the loading of salicylic acid onto Amberlite XAD-16, as shown in Fig. 1a.…”

“…Salicylic acid has carboxylic and phenolic groups that act as electron-pair donors, so they can interact with hard and intermediate cations. 22 The developed FI-SPE-FAAS system was applied to industrial water samples.…”

“…Moreover, the XRD pattern of MM@SiO 2 -DETA (1:1) [ Fig. 3(c)] shows the board peak around 2θ = 20-30° due to the addition of amorphous silica and TMSPDETA on the surface of magnetic material which may cover the crystal particles and lead to the decrease of peak intensity [31]. Magnetization: The magnetic properties of the magnetic material, MM@SiO 2 and MM@SiO 2 -DETA (1:1) were measured by VSM and the results are shown in Fig.…”

“…The amino-functionalized Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 nanoadsorbent exhibited high adsorption affinity for aqueous Cu(II), Pb(II), and Cd(II) ions, resulting from complexation of the metal ions by surface amino groups. Moreover, the adsorption affinity for heavy metal ions was not much affected by the presence of a cosolute of humic acid or alkali/earth metal ions (Na Shishehbore et al [43] reported a method for the pre-concentration of trace heavy metal ions in environmental samples. The method is based on the sorption of Cu(II), Cd(II), Ni(II) and Cr(III) ions with salicylic acid as chelate on silica-coated magnetite nanoparticles.…”
