Sales of systemic anti-infective agents in Cyprus in comparison with four other European countries

Abstract: These data reveal that the sales of antibiotics in Cyprus are higher than in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Greece. The broad-spectrum antibiotics in Cyprus have higher sales than the other antibiotics. This study describes for the first time the pattern of systemic anti-infective agent sales in Cyprus. Further investigations are needed in order to determine the possible factors that might be implicated or explain the high antibiotic sales in Cyprus.

“…The actual defined daily doses (DDDs) of antimicrobials were not known per se during this study. However, earlier sale trends of systemic anti-infective agents in Cyprus revealed that there was one of the highest values in comparison with other European countries ( Hadjimichael et al, 2006 ; ESAC, 2009 ). Another independent cross-sectional study showed that 97,6% of community pharmacists in the north of Cyprus engaged in inappropriate antimicrobial dispensing without medical prescriptions (Kaya Suer et al, 2015, unpublished survey).…”

“…An increase in quantity sales of these medicines in several European countries during 1990-1996 was reported (Hadjimichael et al 2006). In Thailand, though there was no similar report, the expenditure on such medicines accounted for about 23.5%, which was the highest portion of the total in 1999 (Wibulpolprasert 2002).…”

“…Our indicator data for environmental stressors were derived from historical observations from different public recordings and may contain observational bias. Some of the unique exposure levels were, however, supported by the literature; for example, severe exposure to antibiotics in Cyprus primarily arises from the high consumption of anti-infective agents 31 .…”
