Adolescence is a rapid phase of human development at all levels—biologically, psychologically, and socially. The order of most of the biological changes appears to be universal, but the timing and the speed of changes may vary between individuals. During adolescence, important neuronal developments take place in regions of the brain such as the limbic system (which is associated with emotion regulation, reward processing, pleasure seeking, and sleep regulation) and the prefrontal cortex (which is associated with executive functions in late adolescence). Psychosocial and emotional changes occur in parallel with the hormonal and neurodevelopmental changes during adolescence. As their cognitive and intellectual capacities increase, adolescents develop reasoning skills, logic, and moral thinking. They also become more capable of abstract thinking and of making rational judgments. The changes that take place in the adolescent environment and the internal changes of adolescence are interrelated. External influences, which differ between cultures and societies, include social values and norms, as well as the changing roles, responsibilities, relationships, and expectations during this period of life. This entry discusses how culture shapes the experience of, and communication about, mental disorders in adolescence, as well as how it relates to the development of mental disorders.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) has a phenomenology resembling many culture-bound (culture-specific) syndromes described in the anthropological literature. Viewed as a culture-specific syndrome, PMS is an appropriate symbolic representation of conflicting societal expectations that women be both productive and reproductive. By simultaneously denying either alternative, PMS translates role conflict into a standardized cultural idiom. Thus, despite obvious biopsychological determinants, PMS is best understood as a sociocultural phenomenon illustrating both the special status of women in Western culture and the ethnocentrism of Western anthropology which heretofore has only recently begun to identify culture-specific syndromes in its own back yard.

A new definition of the concept of culture-bound syndrome demonstrates that culture-boundedness is common and applies as well to Western biomedical disease categories as to nonWestern categories. Culture-boundedness is important when a common disorder with a large sociopsychological component is frequently treated, but unsuccessfully. To improve intervention success, therapists must recognize and accept that clients and interventionists may employ widely dissimilar culture-bound explanatory models. Therapists must learn to synthesize among models, neither rejecting nor discounting those of clients. The fact that Western notions of cause are culture-bound has gone largely unrecognized because of the tendency among biomedical scientists to treat science as if it were culture-free and universally comprehensible. This is of course a naive and invalid understanding. These points are illustrated for the case of protein-energy malnutrition. If those who design and facilitate intervention to alleviate hunger can come to understand that the scientific explanatory model of protein-energy malnutrition is only one among several cogent models, they will be in a strong position to understand intervention failure and possibly to overcome it.
