Saimiri sciureus' hard palate morphology

Abstract: Morphological aspects of New World non--human primates (NHP) have been extensively investigated since last century. General commonsense describes oral cavity adaptations according to diet and feeding, dentition, tongue projection and head shape. Morphological appearance and dimension of the hard palate have been outstanding as interest in many species including man. Six young Saimiri sciureus hard palate were investigated. We measured the hard palate distance (HL), intercanine distance (ICD), intermolar distan… Show more

“…In the hard palate, the epithelium is characterized with palatine ridges in mammal orders as Carnivore (Ari & Uslu, 2019), Artiodactyl (Mahdy, Abdalla, & Mohamed, 2018), Primate (Lima, Fioretto, Imbeloni, & Branco, 2012), and Rodent (Mustapha, Ayoade, Ogunbunmi, & Olude, 2015), although in the last one, this feature may be absent (Aro et al, 2019).…”

“…The raphe starts at the caudal edge of the incisive papilla and finishes at the rostral edge of the soft palate ( Figure 2B). 48 The median raphe may be complete, incomplete, or absent. 47,49 The palatine folds are also called palatal rugae, palatine crest, or plica palatine.…”

“…47,49 The palatine folds are also called palatal rugae, palatine crest, or plica palatine. 50 The palatal rugae occupy most of the hard palate, extending lateral to medial from the border of the hard palate to the palatine raphe 48 and rostral to caudal from the palatal edge of the attached gingiva of the maxillary incisors and the incisive papilla to the rostral edge of the soft palate ( Figure 2B). 51,52 The palatine crests are classified based on their different morphogenic characteristics such as length (primary, secondary, and fragmentary), shape (straight, wavy-irregular, curveforking, circular-islands), direction (anterior-forward, perpendicular-horizontal, posterior-backward), and unification (diverging or converging; Figure 2C).…”
