Background: Wet nursing and human milk banks are vital sources of human milk for infants unable to breastfeed. Research Aim: This study aims to determine the knowledge and opinions of neonatal intensive care unit nurses regarding wet-nursing and human milk banks in Türkiye. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 219 neonatal intensive care unit nurses using an online survey comprising 20 questions. The data were collected between August and September 2021. Results: Among the participants, 64.4% ( n = 141) expressed that they would be a wet-nurse and 59.8% ( n = 131) would search for a wet-nurse if necessary. Some, 47.0% ( n = 103) of participants did not know if there were any human milk banks in Türkiye, 53.9% ( n = 118) would like to be a donor if human milk banks were established, and 71.7% ( n = 157) stated that the establishment of human milk banks should be supported. Religious concerns were the basis for reluctance to donate milk to human milk banks for 60% ( n = 51) of the participants. Knowledge was greater and opinions about wet-nursing and human milk banks were more positive for participants with higher education, more time in the neonatal intensive care unit, or work at a tertiary care center. Conclusion: The approaches of neonatal intensive care unit nurses towards personally being wet-nurses and milk sharing were generally positive, although more information about human milk banks is needed. Religious beliefs are an important consideration when providing information about milk sharing.

Breastmilk is a natural, easy-to-digest food with high-bioavailability that meets the neonate's optimum growth and development needs in terms of the components it contains. Breastmilk and breastfeeding have many benefits for both the baby and the mother. However, some infants cannot be breastfed after birth for various reasons (mother's death, etc.). For such situations, the WHO, UNICEF and the Ministry of Health (Turkey) propose that another mother can breastfeed the infant. The concept of "mother's milk bank", which has been practiced in our country for many years, corresponds to this suggestion. However, the prevalence of diseases such as AIDS, hepatitis and the rapid growth of the formula industry have led to the abandonment of this traditional practice over the years. In many countries, mother's milk banks have been established to solve this problem. However, the few studies done in our country show that there are divergent views on the establishment of mother's milk banks. As a result, the possibility of creating an acceptable version of mother's milk bank in our country needs to be discussed. As an another result, instead of the mother's milk banks, "wet nurse centers" can be established to offer the same service in Turkey. Thus, the project of reviving "wet nurse and milk sibling" can be an effective solution. The aim of this study is to draw the attention of the community and the health personnel to the concept of wet-nurse and breast milk bank.

Investigation of Midwifery Students' Knowledge, Opinions and Religious Attitudes about Breast Milk Banking

This study was carried out to investigate the relationship between midwifery students' knowledge, views, and religious attitudes about breast milk banking (BMB). Material and Method: The population of this cross-sectional and descriptive study consisted of students from the Faculty of Health Sciences Midwifery Department. No sampling procedure was implemented in the study; instead, the entire population was targeted. Accordingly, 230 students who were at the school during the study and agreed to participate were included in the study. The data was collected using a "descriptive information form", which was developed by the researchers and aimed to collect information about participants' socio-demographic characteristics and knowledge and views on breast milk banking, and the "Religious Attitudes Scale" (RAS). Results: The analysis of the students' responses to the questions checking their knowledge on BMB indicated that 37.0% knew BMB and that some of them had no idea about whether there was a need for BMB in our country (43.0%), whether using milk from a breast milk bank would matter religiously (41.3%), whether donor milk would cause an infection in newborns (48.3%), and whether milk obtained from a milk bank would be reliable (59.6%). The evaluation of students' views showed that 46.1% were not sure about donating their own milk to a breast milk bank, 38.2% would contact a breast milk bank when their baby needed milk, 42.2% thought donating milk was ethical, and that 56.1% said they would recommend this institution to mothers who had insufficient milk. The mean scores of the students from the RAS and the correlation analysis conducted to determine the knowledge and opinions of the students about BMB revealed that as the mean RAS scores increased, using milk from a milk bank would create problems religiously. Conclusion:In this study, it was found that most of the students had poor knowledge and negative opinions about BMB and that increased religious orientation led to taking a negative view against breast milk banking.
