Sagittal laxity in vivo after total knee arthroplasty

Abstract: The above values are considered the suitable degree of AP laxity in total knee arthroplasty for a satisfactory clinical outcome 5-9 years after surgery. The PCL in a PCLR prosthesis and the central tibial spine and femoral cam in a PCLS prosthesis might play comparable roles in determining the laxity in the posterior direction in these prostheses.

“…In 30°of knee flexion, average anterior laxities between 2.9 and 5.3 mm are found for other total knee arthroplasties [2,7,12]. For the posterior laxity of the balanSys TM TKA, no knee laxity at all was found in this study.…”

“…An explanation for this might be the fact that for some of the pathologies no clear definitions are available at the moment. For example, flexioninstability might lead to anterior knee pain, but while there are methods to display this problem [20] there is a lack of information where the cutoff levels for a relevant instability would be [8].…”

“…The topic is important because, as illustrated by a recent report [12], better ROM is associated with increased patient satisfaction. Knee stability after TKA also is known to be an important driver of patient-specific outcomes after reconstruction and is associated with correct AP translation [4, 6, 10, 13, 14, 16, 2426]. …”
