Safety-Related Challenges and Opportunities for GPUs in the Automotive Domain

Abstract: GPUs have been shown to cover the computing performance needs of autonomous driving (AD) systems. However, since the GPUs used for AD build on designs for the mainstream market, they may lack fundamental properties for correct operation under automotive's safety regulations. In this paper, we analyze some of the main challenges in hardware and software design to embrace GPUs as the reference computing solution for AD, with emphasis in ISO 26262 functional safety requirements.

“…Then, we can proceed to decode the Posit. The associated real value is therefore −256 1 • 2 1 • (1 + 39/512). The final value is therefore −512 • (1 + 39/512) = −551 (exact value, i.e., no rounding, for this case).…”

“…The step in Equation (25) is always L1 for esbits = 0 thanks to fast Sigmoid approximation. The result of this step is always on [1,2]. The step in Equation (26) is always L1, and the output is on [1/2, 1] ∈ [0, 1].…”

“…The effectiveness and scalability of traditional Verification and Validation (V&V) approaches are threatened by the complexity and unboundedness of the input and result spaces of functionalities such as perception and tracking [55,6]. The untenable number of potential inputs from the operational environment, and the non-deterministic nature of decision-making algorithms, complicate the definition of worst-case scenarios in both functional and non-functional dimensions [55].…”

“…The answer to this performance demand has been the deployment of accelerators along with the microcontrollers, being Graphic Processing Units (GPUs) the main representative of those [17], [28], [24] despite the existing challenges using GPUs in this domain [29], [5]. In particular, several products such as Renesas R-Car H3 [1], NVIDIA Jetson TX2 [18] and NVIDIA Jetson Xavier [26] have already reached the market building upon GPU technology inherited from the high-performance domain.…”
