Purpose:The aims of this study were to determine the rate of compliance of infection control and estimate the incidence of COVID-19 in dental clinics in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Materials and Methods: This is an ecological correlational study of randomly sampled dental clinics in the city of Jeddah. The 32-question survey used in the study was constructed based on the infection control guidelines/protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic released by the ADA, CDC, and SMOH. A sample of clinics from a dental clinic list in Jeddah city, using a simple random technique. Results: Fifty-three dental clinics consented to participate in our study, while ten refused. Most of the dental clinics checked their patients' temperature (30.2%) and strictly required them to wear a surgical mask before entering the clinic (58.5%). Glove, gown, and face mask were the most common methods of infection control used during all dental procedures (98.1%, 96.2%, and 94.3%, respectively). Moreover, the incidence of COVID-19 was the highest among receptions/security (18.70%), followed by nurses (14.3%) and dentists (11.79%). Conclusion:As the incidence of COVID-19 among dental staff will continue to increase in the future, it is highly recommended that infection control guidelines are followed in all dental clinics.

With the arrival of the highly transmissible Omicron variants (BA.4 and BA.5), dentistry faces another seasonal challenge to preserve the biosafety of dental care and education. With the aim of protecting patients, students, teachers and healthcare professionals, this paper introduces a prospective sustainable biosafety setting for everyday dental care and education. The setting developed by dental clinicians, epidemiologists, and teachers of dentistry consists of a combination of modern technologies focused on the air-borne part of the viral pathway. The introduced biosafety setting has been clinically evaluated after 18 months of application in the real clinical environment. The protocol has three fundamental pillars: (1) UVC air disinfection; (2) air saturation with certified virucidal essences with nebulizing diffusers; (3) complementary solutions including telehealth and 3D printing. A pseudonymous online smart form was used as the evaluation method. The protocol operates on the premise that everybody is a hypothetical asymptomatic carrier. The results of a clinical evaluation of 115 patient feedbacks imply that no virus transmission from patient to patient or from doctor to nurse was observed or reported using this protocol, and vice versa, although nine patients retrospectively admitted that the clinic visit is likely to be infectious. Despite these promising results, a larger clinical sample and exposition to the current mutated strains are needed for reliable conclusions about protocol virucidal efficiency in current dental environments.

Frente ao atual contexto pandêmico, têm-se discutido a importância da adoção de medidas de biossegurança pelos diferentes profissionais da saúde em todos os níveis de atenção. Assim, o objetivo desse estudo foi evidenciar e discutir, a partir das análises de produções científicas já publicadas, as medidas de biossegurança adotadas por diferentes profissionais de saúde durante a pandemia da COVID-19. Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa da literatura, cujas buscas foram realizadas no portal da CAPES, BVS, SciELO e PubMed, através da combinação dos descritores nos idiomas inglês e português: “biossegurança” AND “COVID-19” AND “profissionais de saúde”. Os 16 estudos selecionados foram analisados, sumarizados e tabulados para serem discutidos, a partir das seguintes categorias: equipamento de proteção individual (EPI), protocolo e treinamento, abrangendo diversas áreas da saúde. O equipamento de proteção individual é uma medida importante para a segurança dos profissionais de saúde e dos pacientes, sendo citados protetores faciais, máscaras cirúrgicas, respiradores N95/PFF2/PFF3, batas cirúrgicas, luvas, gorro e sapatos. Protocolos e recomendações relacionados à Odontologia, Medicina Forense, Audiologia, Biossegurança Laboratorial e Ambiente Domiciliar têm sido desenvolvidos. A política de educação permanente em saúde deve ser considerada e empregada continuamente.
