Lean construction has been viewed as an effective management approach for reducing the occurrence of no-value or destructive activities, such as wasting resources and safety-related accidents. However, few studies have systematically addressed how and to what extent lean construction practices influence construction safety. To bridge this gap, a conceptual model is developed and validated using a system dynamics approach. The construction system in this model comprises four sub-systems (i.e., environment system, equipment system, management system, and employee system). Data were collected from 448 projects in China. Simulations were conducted to determine the correlations between five types of lean tools and the four construction sub-systems. The results show that: (a) 5S management has significant positive impacts on the control of key locations and facilities at construction sites, and contributes to the mitigation of environmental impacts; (b) visual management can significantly improve safety compliance and safety management; (c) just-in-time management has significantly positive influences on the safety facilities layout and formulation of the safety plan; and (d) the Last Planner® System and conference management are effective in improving safety training and the implementation of the safety plan. These findings provide new insights into the use of lean construction for improving construction safety through the implementation of a targeted lean approach.

Psychosocial safety climate (PSC) is a facet-specific organizational climate that relates to employee psychological safety and health. Since the proposal of PSC over 10 years ago, PSC has received significant attention from researchers interested in the effect of the meso-level organizational context and its relationship with occupational health and safety. The theory of PSC is an emergent phenomenon which proposes that organizations differ in terms of their prioritization of psychological aspects of individual's well-being over productivity imperatives. Empirical evidence relating to PSC theory has largely supported the notion that PSC is a lead indicator of workplace psychological health and safety, largely through its influence on the job design and socio-relational aspects of the work environment. To date, more than 62 research outputs, including books, journal articles, book chapters, and industry reports, have been published in relation to PSC theory and its negative relationship with occupational health issues using qualitative, quantitative, and meta-analytic research designs. However despite substantial evidence outlining the preeminent role of PSC as a predictor of psychosocial workplace factors, several questions remain to be answered. This chapter summarizes the propositions of PSC theory and empirical evidence relating to PSC to date. It provides an overview about what is known in the PSC literature and suggests further areas for exploration to expand on our understanding of the influence of meso-level PSC measured at the organizational and group level as a cause of the workplace conditions that affect workplace psychological health.

A value-added-oriented (VAO) BIM climate is the organizational climate of BIM value-added. However, a lack of research on VAO BIM climate has thwarted progress on BIM knowledge systems. By using the socio-technical systems approach and the competing value approach, 12 dimensions and 39 indicators of a VAO BIM climate are proposed and tested using 306 questionnaires collected from workers engaged in BIM construction projects across China. Data was analyzed by confirmatory factor analysis. The results show that the proposed dimensions and indicators are highly reliable and valid. The VAO BIM climate is heavily influenced by autonomy, career development, and task orientation. The top 10 indicators were mainly related to participation, task orientation, and goal effectiveness. And the MWD-BIM, RCS-BIM, CDMT-BIM, and SMD-BIM were mistaken as key indicators of participation, autonomy, peer relations, and organizational adaptability, respectively. The proposed dimensions and indicators can be used to advance scholarly understanding and theory on BIM climate in construction projects through directing resource allocation, enhancing the understanding of human–BIM interactions, improving the BIM knowledge system and facilitating decision framework of BIM adoption. Practical implications for managers in construction projects are provided in the end.
