Safety Assessment of Talc as Used in Cosmetics

Abstract: The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel (Panel) assessed the safety of talc for use in cosmetics. The safety of talc has been the subject of much debate through the years, partly because the relationship between talc and asbestos is commonly misunderstood. Industry specifications state that cosmetic-grade talc must contain no detectable fibrous, asbestos minerals. Therefore, the large amount of available animal and clinical data the Panel relied on in assessing the safety of talc only included those studie… Show more

“…Topical application of baby talcum powder is thought to be useful in keeping the skin dry [11, 23, 24]. However, it has only been found to be beneficial in cases of uncomplicated diaper dermatitis and not in more severe cases of cutaneous inflammation [25]. In addition, the application of talcum powder to areas of the skin where the epidermal barrier is absent or significantly disrupted or to moist areas can cause skin irritation [13, 15, 26].…”

“…The remarkable chemical purity of the talc particles combined with the small percentage of accessory minerals in the deposit (especially for BTT7) suggest applications in cosmetics. The cosmetics industry requires talc deposits of very high quality, as up to 90% should be composed of talc and should be free of fibrous or asbestos-form minerals (Fiume et al , 2015). The talc particles should also have very low Pb (<20 ppm) and As contents (<3 ppm), and they should be free of quartz.…”
