Safety Assessment of Fatty Acid Amidopropyl Dimethylamines as Used in Cosmetics

Abstract: The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel (Panel) reviewed the safety of fatty acid amidopropyl dimethylamines, which function primarily as antistatic agents in cosmetic products. The relevant animal and human data reviewed for these ingredients indicate that they are potential dermal sensitizers that may be due in part by the sensitizing impurity, 3,3-dimethylaminopropylamine. The Panel concluded that fatty acid amidopropyl dimethylamines were safe as cosmetic ingredients when they are formulated to be nons… Show more

“…8 In 2019, the Panel advised industry to continue minimizing the concentrations of the sensitizing impurities, highlighting that DMAPA in oleamidopropyl dimethylamine seems to exceed the limit recommended. 9 Despite this, we found that the majority of the DMAPA-positive patients (39/68; 57.3%), all with clinical relevance, reported the onset of the dermatitis during the last 2 years thus demonstrating that DMAPA is still present at sensitizing concentrations in many products as an impurity.…”

“…In conclusion, we believe that legislative interventions on DMAPA to improve consumer safety are advisable. As stated by Burnett et al, DMAPA should be present in cosmetic products at a concentration lower than 0.01%. We would also stress that DMAPA should be tested in the baseline series.…”

“…Pomegranate seed oil, which is a rich source of vitamin F, is used in the production of cosmetics with a renewing, nourishing, moisturizing, and refreshing effect on the skin [99,100]. The concentrations of EFAs in cosmetics vary [101]. For example, linoleic acid is used at up to 3.4% in face, neck, hand, and body skin care products and at up to 21.8% in rinse-off skin cleansing products.…”

“…FDA dissuades pregnant/nursing women and small children from using personal care products containing chlorphenesin (anti-fungal and anti-bacterial preservative) [16] . The sensitizing reactions with Amidopropyl Dimethylamines (anti-static agent) was due to the impurities like 3,3-dimethylaminopropylamine [17] . Two of the 16 main ingredients used in OTC sunblock products are safe, the FDA said.…”
