“…Based on data from a prospective, randomized trial, Sugi et al [44] found no difference in the 3-and 5-year survival rates after VATS versus conventional lobectomy for stage IA NSCLC (90% versus 93% at 3 years and 90% versus 85% at 5 years). Several other studies were in accordance with these results, and the 5-year survival for VATS lobectomy was near 80% [51][52][53]; similar to that for traditional open procedures (75% to 82%).…”

“…Standard curative treatment for patients with resectable NSCLC is lobectomy by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery 79 . This minimally invasive approach can reduce postoperative morbidity and duration of hospitalization, but eligibility depends on the individual patient, the location of the tumour and the expertise of the centre.…”

“…It has been reported that there was a nine-fold increase in the utilization of VATS from the mid 90's the early 21st century and this trend appears to be increasing as the skill and experience at high volume institutions continues to increase (17). Prior series have shown VATS to be equivalent or better than conventional thoracotomy in terms of operative morbidity and mortality (4).…”
