Safety and efficacy of a new transpulmonary echo contrast agent in echocardiographic studies in patients

Abstract: This first report of the effect of Albunex injected intravenously on pulmonary artery pressures in humans demonstrates that this contrast agent appears to be safe. The significant left ventricular opacification obtained in a majority of patients without an important increase in attenuation supports the use of the higher dose of the contrast agent.

“…There was no interference with pulmonary gas exchange. These findings are in concordance with those of a similar patient study on Albunex, a contrast agent consisting of air filled albumin microspheres,6 as well as an experimental study in dogs using FS-069,7 which, like NC100100, is a second generation ultrasound contrast agent.…”

“…HSA based formulations such as Abraxane [194,195] and Albunex [196] have shown good tolerability as evident from the clinical studies. So their efficacy of albumin formulations with minimum side effects is guaranteed.…”

“…Albumin is an attractive macromolecular carrier that has been shown to be non-toxic, non-immunogenic, biodegradable to produce innocuous degradation products, and easy to purify [13]. It is thus a suitable candidate for nanoparticle preparation, as demonstrated by FDA-approved products such as Abraxane [14], [15] and Albunex [16], [17].…”
