Safety and Colon-Cleansing Efficacy of a New Residue-Free Formulation of Sodium Phosphate Tablets

Abstract: Based on the safety, efficacy, and patient preferences, the 32-tablet RF-NaP regimen was superior to the 40-tablet RF-NaP and NaP regimen for colon cleansing prior to colonoscopy.

“…Bowel preparation was evaluated and graded as previously described. 7 This bowel preparation classification was discussed and agreed on by all the endoscopists before the start of enrollment. Subjects with inadequate bowel preparation (Ͻ90% mucosa seen, mixture of semisolid and solid colonic contents that could not be suctioned or washed) were excluded.…”

“…Sodium phosphate osmotically draws plasma water into the bowel lumen to promote colonic cleansing and significant fluid and electrolyte shifts can occur [39] . Two meta analyses, comprising 71 trials (10 201 subjects) and 18 trials (2792 subjects) respectively, previously concluded that sodium phosphate-based bowel preparations resulted in a more complete and better quality of bowel preparation compared to 4-L PEG [44,45] , mainly due to the poorer compliance with the latter [46][47][48][49] . However, sodium phosphate is associated with significant fluid and electrolyte shifts due to its hyperosmotic nature and patients with renal impairment, dehydration, on angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, or angiotensin receptor blockers can develop renal failure [50][51][52] .…”

“…Rex et al compared the bowel cleansing efficacy of three split-dose NaP tablet regimens taken the evening before and morning of colonoscopy: 40 standard NaP tablets, 40 low-residue NaP tablets, and 32 low-residue tablets [31]. Colon cleansing was rated as ''excellent'' or ''good'' in 95% of patients assigned to the original 40-tablet formulation, 97% in the 40-tablet low-residue regimen, and 95% in the 32-tablet low-residue regimen.…”
