Safeguarding Wireless Network with UAVs: A Physical Layer Security Perspective

Abstract: Integrating unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into future wireless systems such as the fifth-generation (5G) cellular network is anticipated to bring significant benefits for both UAV and telecommunication industries. Generally speaking, UAVs can be used as new aerial platforms in the cellular network to provide communication services for terrestrial users, or become new aerial users of the cellular network served by the terrestrial base stations. Due to their high altitude, UAVs usually have dominant line-ofsig… Show more

“…Interference mitigation is crucial for both frameworks of cellular-connected UAVs and UAVassisted terrestrial communications. Furthermore, the LoSdominant air-ground links also make UAV communications more susceptible to the jamming/eavesdropping attacks by malicious ground nodes as compared to the terrestrial communications over fading channels, thus imposing a new security threat at the physical layer [15].…”

“…This strategy is especially suitable for networks with limited energy and large distance between the source-destination pair, compared with other ways sending signals directly to the destination, e.g. the cooperative remote jamming method in [34].…”

“…numerous applications, UAV communications face new challenges. Among others, due to the LoS links, the legitimate UAV communications are more prone to the interception by suspicious eavesdroppers on the ground [2]. Fortunately, the high mobility of UAVs provides a new opportunity to enhance the secrecy rate of UAV communications by leveraging proper trajectory design.…”
