Safe storage and thefts of firearms in Sweden: An empirical study

Abstract: Strict safe storage regulations are a cornerstone of the Swedish gun control legislation. The rationale is that, by limiting the number of guns a licensed gun owner may own and requiring them to have their guns locked up in gun safes when not in use, legal guns may be prevented from ending up in the hands of criminals through theft. This study, the first full population data study of gun thefts in Sweden, investigated all reported gun thefts in Sweden from 2003 and 2010 and in the county of Stockholm from 1995… Show more

“…For example, in the United States, 54.6% of suicide deaths in 2021 were firearm‐related, 54 whereas 11.7% of suicides were due to firearms across the observation period in the current study. In contrast to permissive firearm access in the US, in Sweden, a license is required for firearm ownership or possession and ammunition purchase, subsequent to a check in the police registry 55,56 ; background checks may include an assessment of mental health, which could preclude ownership among individuals with AUD 56 ; and licenses require training in firearm safety 55,57 . Thus, firearm‐related means restriction could prevent far more suicides in the US than in Sweden.…”

“…Very little research substantiates the claim, so often made in the popular media, that Australia's Firearms Agreement (see Baker & McPhedran, 2007; Gilmour et al, 2018; McPhedran et al, 2011; Neill & Leigh, 2008; Reuter & Mouzos, 2003) is responsible for its lower gun crime rates, and there has been even less research conducted on changes to gun control in Great Britain and New Zealand. Outside of the Anglo‐American sphere, various gun laws in Europe could also provide interesting case studies for those with an appetite to look (Lakomaa, 2015).…”

“…More than half of the weapons are for hunting . The origin of illegal firearms in Sweden is not well described; however, the number of weapons acquired by theft is reportedly small and decreasing .…”
