Safe Sleep for Hospitalized Infants

Abstract: There was inconsistency between nursing knowledge and practice about safe infant sleep. Nurses were aware of the AAP recommendations, but it took time to achieve close to full compliance in changing clinical practice. Observation was an important part of this initiative to reinforce knowledge and role model best practice for parents.

“…Comments QA 2016). Authors of three of these five studies (Gelfer et al, 2013;Hwang, O'Sullivan, et al, 2015;McMullen et al, 2016) used an online continuing education program offered by NICHD about reducing the risk of SIDS and other causes of sleep-related infant death based on the most recent recommendations from the AAP (NICHD, NIH, & USDHHS, 2015). In two studies, researchers used mandatory in-service staff education sessions to present the material (Voos et al, 2015;Zachritz et al, 2016), and results from these studies showed an increase in safe sleep compliance among neonatal nurses caring for premature infants after the educational intervention.…”

“…In light of the public health burden caused by infant mortality and the significant health disparities associated with SIDS and other causes of sleep‐related infant death, it is important to identify who is providing education and advice on this topic and what they are recommending. Little is known about the knowledge and infant safe sleep educational practices of CNMs providing prenatal care, as most research on this topic has focused on nursing specialties and has been conducted with the purpose of examining and improving infant safe sleep practices within hospitals, hospital nurseries, and neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) . While there have not been any prior peer‐reviewed publications examining CNMs’ knowledge and behaviors regarding infant safe sleep practices, some studies have been done with nurses.…”
