Safe Needling Depth of Acupuncture Points

Abstract: There is great inconsistency in terms of safe needling depths measured from different subject groups and measuring methods. There is suitable justification for a well-designed clinical trial to investigate the real needling depth for each acupuncture points to avoid adverse effects or complications.

“…Most of the previously conducted studies regarding acupuncture needling depth used CT as the measuring tool. 35 In this investigation, we used MRI as a measuring tool due to its excellent soft tissue contrast and multiplanar imaging capability. 36 The objective of this study is to find the mean distances from the skin surface to the major organs of 11 acupoints that would cause no harm during the treatment of each point and to compare the differences between participants with variables including gender and BMI.…”

“…They include gender, age, body size (such as body length, body weight, waist girth, and BMI), which side of the body, angle of needling, and so forth. Chou et al have reviewed part of the researches previously [120]. Among these factors, body size is always considered the most significant one which complies with our general understanding that subjects with greater body size would have greater measured depth in most of the acupuncture points.…”

“…Examples are additional studies in safe needling depths, especially of points implicated in problems 59 or in patients more at risk of complications. 66 Following this excellent study by He and colleagues, we recommend the need for large prospective studies of safety and adverse effects in China in order to identify more precisely complications from actual clinical practice and to examine the impact of improved educational standards.…”
