Safe halomethylation of aromatic polymers via BCME-free long chain haloalkylethers

Abstract: Long chain halomethylalkyl ethers, ROCHzX (X=CI, Br), can be prepared, free of bischloromethyl ether (BCME), by reaction of a primary alkanol, e.g. 1-octanol in halogenated hydrocarbons, with (CHzO), and HX. In the reaction ROH ------+ROCHzX, the structure of the alkanol and the ratio CH20/ROH determines the formation of BCME. Various aromatic substrates, in particular polymers, were halomethylated.
