Saccharomyces cerevisiae: A novel and efficient biological control agent for Colletotrichum acutatum during pre-harvest

Abstract: In this study, we evaluated the efficiency of six isolates of Saccharomyces cerevisiae in controlling Colletotrichum acutatum, the causal agent of postbloom fruit drop that occur in pre-harvest citrus. We analyzed the mechanisms of action involved in biological control such as: production of antifungal compounds, nutrient competition, detection of killer activity, and production of hydrolytic enzymes of the isolates of S. cerevisiae on C. acutatum and their efficiency in controlling postbloom fruit drop on det… Show more

“…Several antagonistic microorganisms have been recommended to be used in fields before harvest with the purpose of protecting postharvest cultivation [7,29]. Lopes et al [110] assessed the efficacy of different antagonistic microorganisms in controlling Colletotrichum acutatum with applications on preharvest citrus fruit and found promising results. Silva and De Costa [111] assessed the potential of Burkholderia spinosa with preharvest applications for the BC of phytopathogens in banana (Musa spp.).…”

“…In addition to the development of novel biocontrol agents to prevent latent infections, a biocontrol agent (as well as a chemical compound) may be applied early in the season or even during the flowering stage. Therefore, application of biocontrol agents in the field during the growing season has been suggested (Ippolito and Nigro 2000;Lima et al 1997;Lopes et al 2015). However, knowledge on epidemiology of the causal agents of latent postharvest diseases is limited.…”

“…Fungal co-culturing techniques have been used previously to mimic in vitro microbial interactions occurring in their natural environment and to identify new antifungal compounds (Liu et al, 2001; Kim et al, 2015; Lopes et al, 2015; Ting and Jioe, 2016). We selected B. cinerea as a model to be used in fungal co-cultures and to induce the production of new SMs derived from fungal interactions.…”
