Saccades during symmetrical vergence

Abstract: Chronometry of saccades during vergence suggests that they do not participate to vergence triggering, and that prefrontal control of vergence previously reported was not mediated by saccades.

“…First, our use of a fixation cross permanently overlapping the appearance of lateral stimuli, together with their close eccentricities, minimized the probability of the occurrence of express saccades during the exposure of lateral stimuli (see Procedure). Second, our detection task offered the left visual field an advantage, whereas motor biases of the eyes are rather rightward as evidenced for fixation [40], express saccades [41] or saccades during vergence [42]. With regard to spatial attention biases, Bowers et al [43] evidenced a left bias in normal adults performing a line bisection task under visual or tactile modality, which they termed pseudoneglect in reference to a mirror behavior of the left neglect following right parietal brain damage.…”

“…The LED stimulus targets were located at the following three full vergence angle demands: 2, 3, and 4°. The target positions were chosen because smaller vergence movements have been shown to elicit fewer saccadic responses compared to larger vergence movements (Coubard and Kapoula, 2008; Semmlow et al, 2008, 2009; Chen et al, 2010). …”
