“…S100B is secreted by adipocytes and is involved in the pathogenesis of obesity as shown in vitro (Fujiya et al, 2014) and in vivo (Buckman et al, 2014). Positive correlation of serum S100B with BMI was previously reported in a combined sample of cognitively intact lean and obese subjects (Steiner et al, 2010a) and in subjects with schizophrenia (Steiner et al, 2010b). In our study the positive correlation in the whole sample was likely driven by the healthy subgroup, with no such association in minor depressive episode.…”

“…We also did not find any difference in triglyceride levels between violent and non-violent suicide attempters. This study also evaluated other markers related to adiposity, namely leptin, CRP and S100B (Eikelis et al, 2006;Steiner et al, 2010a). BDNF was also investigated because it is widely involved in body energetic homeostasis and commonly associated with psychiatric disorders with an elevated rate of suicide (Fernandes et al, 2013(Fernandes et al, , 2011Marosi and Mattson, 2014).…”

“…Serum S100B protein comes from the brain and from other non-neural sources, particularly adipose tissue (Goncalves et al, 2010. In fact, serum S100B levels in humans appear to closely reflect adipose tissue mass (Gross et al, 2010;Steiner et al, 2010a). Some studies have shown elevated levels of serum S100B in episodes of mood disorders, and these elevations were more evident in major depressive disorder than in bipolar disorder (Schroeter and Steiner, 2009).…”

“…Early studies show expression of S100B protein in pre-and mature-adipocyte and is induced during adipogenesis 62,63 . Physiological S100B levels appear to closely reflect adipose tissue mass or insulin resistance in humans [64][65][66] . HMGB1 is also found to be expressed in human adipose tissue with the expression level associated with the fat mass and obesity-associated gene 67 .…”
