“…Zhao et al (1997), He et al (2002), Sun et al (2003), Wang et al (2003) suggested that the main hydrocarbon source rocks are in the Lower-Middle Cambrian, while Zhang et al (2000Zhang et al ( , 2005 considered that Middle-Upper Ordovician source rocks are also important, a similar conclusion was drawn by Hanson et al (2000). We and other authors believe that mixing and multiple charge episodes have complicated the results of these oil source rock correlation studies (Peng et al, 2002;Wang et al, 2003;Se et al, 2007;Ma et al, 2005;Cai et al, 2009;Li et al, 2009). Thus, available oil-source rock correlation results have shown that petroleum may be derived mainly from the Lower-Middle Cambrian and the Middle-Upper Ordovician marine strata (Table 1).…”

“…Though controversies on the source of marine oil lie in whether the major source rock could be in the Middle-Lower Cambrian [4,27] or the Middle-Lower Ordovician [1, [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20] in the Lunnan area [35] , yet there are common views on biomarker characteristics of the Cambrian and Ordovician source rocks. The Cambrian source rock is characterized by high content of tricyclic terpane, C 28 -sterane and gammacerane, which is opposite to Ordovician source rock.…”

“…Ruthenium ion-catalyzed oxidation (RICO) is a highly selective chemical degradation approach, and it has been commonly used for recognition of the chemical structures of coals, kerogens, and petroleum. During RICO, unsubstituted aromatic carbon can be selectively oxidized to CO 2 without altering the structural integrity of aliphatic units . The selectivity of RICO can help us to estimate the side chain distribution of the alkyl groups that are attached to the aromatic carbons and the alkyl bridge bond connecting two aromatic carbons in organic substances.…”
