Rust (Puccinia emaculata) Management and Impact on Biomass Yield in Switchgrass

Abstract: Rust, putatively caused by Puccinia emaculata, is a widespread and potentially damaging disease of switchgrass, a crop produced as feedstock for livestock and bioenergy. Azoxystrobin, chlorothalonil, and myclobutanil were applied at 1-, 2-, 3-, or 4-wk intervals for 12 to 14 wks to the vegetatively propagated switchgrass cultivar ‘Cloud Nine’ to assess fungicide selection and application interval for the control of rust as well as the impact of this disease on switchgrass biomass yield. While rust severity sig… Show more

“…Significant losses in biomass and ethanol yields can occur from infestations with rust Puccinia novopanici (Pn), previously Puccinia emaculata [12][13][14], and there is uncertainty of yield stability of switchgrass monocultures under constant disease pressures. Within the context of the Central Great Plains of the US, breeding research has resulted in the release of the first bioenergy-specific cultivar named Liberty [15].…”
