In this commentary I respond to the editor's dual invitation to offer critical geographical understandings of the Ukraine war and to reply to Ian Klinke's (Klinke, 2023) specific criticisms of my arguments about the role of NATO expansion in it. I suggest that first, we should recognise that geographical factors are crucial in understanding why the war occurred. Second, we need to theorise how geographical imaginations influence international relations and have done here in the form of NATO expansion. Finally, we should explore counter‐mappings of European futures in ways that could help us move towards a resolution of this terrible war.

The war in Ukraine poses an exceptionally dangerous risk of major escalation by design, accident or miscalculation. However, the causes and drivers of the war are far from exceptional, being struggles over how to imagine, name, organize, and control space at local, regional (subnational), national and international scales. Advocating a geography that is “for peace,” this article uses a transscalar conception of how conflict and peace are interrelated within states and internationally. Analyzing a number of key Russian government speeches and legal texts, it identifies major political geographical elements of the conflict and, drawing on comparative examples, proposes creative ways in which they might be addressed as part of negotiations.

This commentary explores the degree to which the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine has posed a challenge for political geographers. I reason that while the war has exposed conceptual weaknesses and political blind spots, it has also validated many of the foci with which geographers have approached post‐Cold War European security. By drawing attention to the epistemological and moral problems of current NATO scepticism, I argue that tactics of counter‐mapping and whataboutery need to be carried out with the necessary care for the historical and political context.
