Rural Landscape Architecture: Traditional versus Modern Façade Designs in Western Spain

Abstract: In any rural area, ensuring both architectural quality and preservation of rural characteristics must be a goal of building design for sustainable environments. Imitation of traditional building techniques and use of natural materials are trendy again in landscape architecture of rural areas in Spain. This is especially visible in architectural design of façades of new building. However, there are few researches that focus on analyzing the visual effect of this new architecture in landscape integration. In reg… Show more

“…This may be due to the construction materials of both initial buildings, which clearly performed better in the residential case than in the agricultural case (case B residential, Figure 3; case A agricultural, Figure 4). In studies on the visual impact of a building based on its visual design elements, the "construction materials" study variable has been shown to have a significant contribution [11,36,44,[56][57][58]. However, the impacts resulting from this aspect were not assessed or measured in this study.…”

“…The façade is normally a very visible part of a building and occupies a larger area than the roof [28,29]. Façade construction materials are normally chosen solely based on functional and financial criteria, and insulation and mechanical strength are typically more important than elements such as color in the choice of materials [30,31].…”

“…Other authors reported that agricultural buildings are normally rated lower than residential buildings, and one of the reasons for this may be the construction materials [14,54,64]. Using a suitable color to paint a building which, due to its typology, has no fine elements in its finishings such as tiles, stone, or wood can increase its rating [31]. In contrast, residential-winery buildings were expected to be rated higher than agricultural buildings because of their materials, but these typologies were rated the same when the façade color was white.…”
