Rural Islandness as a Lens for (Rural) HCI

Abstract: This article contributes to research that aims to better understand and describe the rural context for rural computing. We argue that the particularities of rurality are heightened by the experience of ‘islandness’. We report on our experiences of engaging on one small island as islanders established community radio using a novel platform. Data comes from 12 semi-structured interviews with community members and ethnographic field notes assembled through eight researcher visits to the island. Transcripts and no… Show more

“…In addition, Caribbean islands are particular in that they are characterized by their islandness-a way of thinking that has been defined through metaphors, "reality of place," islander identity, and physical and social isolation (Robinson et al, 2021). Vannini and Taggart (2013, p. 225) argue that islandness is the result of islanders being required to make "use of whatever is at hand, solving ongoing concerns as they present themselves."…”

“…A robust body of research examines how communities collaborate to build and maintain their own community networks for Internet and digital services [21, 23-25, 28, 54], especially in places where they were formerly inaccessible [31,33]. Many studies of CNs [22,29,37,40,42] and community radio projects [41,43,45,52,57] integrate technical development with community engagement, putting social science in direct conversation with system design and implementation.…”

“…This requires polyvocal participatory processes that are attuned to issues of power and equality, recognise diverse identities, perspectives and experiences and give space for contradiction and dissent (Murray et al 2023;Stephens 2019). In the rurban context, these processes need to be especially sensitive due to high levels of interdependence because of the recent rural past (Robinson et al 2021). This interdependence, and the legacy of the 'tightly knit' rural community (Liepins 2000;Meagher 2009;Thomas et al 2015), makes participatory rurban CSCW more challenging as dominant social norms are confronted and uprooted.…”
