West Java is one of the provinces in Indonesia with a high percentage of poor farmer’s households. Furthermore, migration is often associated with economic conditions and is carried out by farmer’s households as a livelihood strategy to cope with poverty and vulnerability. This research aims to describe the migration carried out by farmer’s households and to analyze the factors influencing the decision of members to migrate. This study relies on longitudinal data from the Indonesian Family Life Survey in 2007 and 2014 to evaluate the migration phenomenon that occurred from 2007 to 2014. The respondents are members of farmer’s households in West Java Province, a total of 615 individuals, including 89 migrants and 526 non-migrants. Descriptive analysis and logistic regression were used to answer the research objectives. The results showed that respondents’ age, perceived current living conditions, and ability to meet children’s needs significantly and negatively affect the decision to migrate; meanwhile, crop failure significantly and positively affects the decision to migrate. In the face of limited financial resources and vulnerabilities, farmer households allocate productive human resources to migrate and earn a living outside their village. Further research can be directed to provide a broader picture of migration carried out by farmer households by analyzing macro conditions that affect their livelihood. The government can play a role in formulating an economic and social reintegration strategy. Hence, the remittances obtained by migrants can ensure sustainable livelihoods and contribute to agricultural development.

Eco-environmental variability was the basis of ethnic diversity with a persistent influence on the regional development. The unique geographic conditions and multi-ethnic characteristics in southwest China were valuable for exploring sustainable development of ethnic regions. In this study, the regional features of distribution areas of ethnic groups in southwest China were analysed, and it was found that average altitude, slope, water coverage and water form ratio of each ethnic group differed apparently. Additionally, regional features of southern minorities were relatively stable, while those of northern minorities changed evidently from 1990 to 2010. Furthermore, taking the spatial coordinates and regional features as parameters, fifty-eight ethnic groups were clustered into six categories via spatial cluster analysis. Moreover, based on the county-level population data, the ethnic similarities in southwest China were identified by correlation analysis, and the results were in accordance with those of spatial cluster analysis but more detailed. In addition, the eco-environmental adaptability of various ethnic groups was discussed in terms of living and production as well as regional sustainable development. This research was of referential meaning for population settlement, natural resources utilization and biodiversity conservation in multi-ethnic regions.

Ecocultural tourism plays an crucial role in promoting poverty reduction and farmers’ sustainable livelihood enhancement worldwide, which has attracted strong attention from scholars and society. However, the impact of ecological and cultural capital of farmers’ sustainable livelihoods have not been yet fully investigated. This paper modifies the sustainable livelihoods framework (SLF) and emphasizes the effects of ecological and cultural capital on farmers’ sustainable livelihoods. The modified SLF can be used as a possible theoretical model to comprehensively characterize farmers’ sustainable livelihoods in tourism destinations with rich ecological and cultural resources. By constructing an evaluation index system, principle component analysis and multiple linear regression are used to analyze the types and response levels of farmers’ sustainable livelihoods to ecocultural tourism and determine the factors influencing this response. The results show that farmers’ sustainable livelihood responses to ecocultural tourism can be classified into six types. The overall response values are low, and the responses are ranked by the degree of response in descending order as complete response, balanced development, cultural network, ecology-dominant, developmental delay, and resource advantage response. Farmers’ sustainable livelihoods respond strongly to cultural capital and ecological capital factors and relatively weakly to physical, natural, social, financial, and labor capital. Five main factors that influence farmers’ sustainable livelihood responses are then identified. Finally, strategies and suggestions for livelihood transformation, strategy selection, and improvement are proposed. This study provides case study examples for promoting the sustainable development of ecocultural tourism sites and improving farmers’ livelihoods in China and worldwide.
