“…Other researchers found low self-esteem to predict adolescent behavior problems in general (Cowen & Work, 1988;Rutter, 1987) and adolescent ATOD use specifically (Kandel & Yamaguchi, 1985;Rhodes & Jason, 1988). Similarly, Dupont and Jason (1984) described the self-concept enhancement segment of their drug use prevention program (based primarily on assertiveness training) as essential for deterring substance use among seventh graders.…”

“…This frustration is compounded for counselors who spend a significant amount of time setting up the referral in the first place. For this reason, effective counselors know their client populations and have strong, cooperative relationships with agencies in the community (Richmond & Peeples, 1984).…”

“…It has, in fact, been suggested that schools alone are not capable of solving substance use and abuse problems; support from the community is necessary (Lohrmann & Fors, 1986;Richmond & Peeples, 1984). However, tobacco use may be viewed as less urgent than other health issues (e.g., AIDS, sexual abuse, and eating disorders).…”
