Rupture Site Location of Surgically Treated Thumb Metacarpophalangeal Ulnar and Radial Collateral Ligaments

Abstract: Thumb metacarpophalangeal collateral ligament injuries occur in 50 per 100,000 people. The most frequent rupture site locations that are often cited are the thumb ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) occurring distally from the proximal phalanx and the radial collateral ligament (RCL) occurring proximally from the metacarpal head. 2,16 In this study, we report the frequency of the rupture site location of both thumb UCL and RCL injuries. Methods: A retrospective analysis of 1,004 consecutive finger collateral ligam… Show more

“…RCL avulsions more commonly occur off the metacarpal attachment than from the one on the proximal phalanx (Coyle, 2003; Smith, 1977). This finding corroborates with data describing the ligament failing more often proximally than distally (Morales-Restrepo et al., 2021). In a military cohort, two out of 18 RCL injuries had an associated avulsion fracture, and both were treated non-operatively (Taylor et al., 2013).…”

“…Avulsion fractures occur in up to 18% of UCL injuries. The most common symptoms include pain and weakness with use of the thumb during pinch and grip (Morales-Restrepo et al., 2021).…”
