Rupture Resolution Rating System (3RS): Development and validation

Abstract: Objective: Our aim was to examine the reliability and validity of the Rupture Resolution Rating System (3RS), an observer-based measure of alliance ruptures and resolution processes. Method: We used the 3RS to rate early sessions from 42 cases of cognitive behavior therapy. We compared the 3RS to a simplified version of the Structural Analysis of Social Behavior (SASB), as well as patient and therapist self-reports of ruptures and the alliance. Results: Coders achieved high rates of interrater reliability on t… Show more

“…The Rupture Resolution Rating System (3RS; Eubanks, Muran, & Safran, ) is an observer‐based coding system of alliance ruptures and resolution strategies rated per 5 min segments. Ruptures can range from subtle tension (e.g., client passively accepting interpretation) to a more explicit tension (e.g., client rejecting the necessity of a given task).…”

“…Ruptures can range from subtle tension (e.g., client passively accepting interpretation) to a more explicit tension (e.g., client rejecting the necessity of a given task). The 3RS has demonstrated good inter‐rater reliability for the frequency of rupture markers (Eubanks, Lubitz, Muran, & Safran, ). The rupture ratings showed excellent inter‐rater reliability (ICC(2,2) = 1) (Koo & Li, ).…”

“…For reasons of space, methods of analysis will not be described in detail, but included thematic and discursive analysis of talk (Georgaca & Avdi, 2001); coding of the therapeutic alliance rupture and repair processes (Eubanks, Muran, & Safran, ); postural congruence (Paraskevopoulou & Avdi, ); measurements of autonomic arousal; and facial expression (Symeonidou, Mylona & Avdi, )…”
