Rupture of the Distal Oesophagus with Invagination and Prolapse of the Stomach into the Right Pleural Cavity: An Unusual Complication of Laparoscopy

Abstract: A previously unrecorded complication of laparoscopy is described and its probable pathogenesis discussed: rupture of the distal oesophagus with invagination of the stomach into the right pleural cavity. Peritoneal overdistension as etiologic factor of the reported complication has to be avoided to prevent gastrointestinal displacements and alterations of pulmonary mechanics; these risks will be kept to a minimum by monitoring the infraabdominal pressure.
