“…Their summary of 116 cases of diaphragmatic hernias in dogs and cats showed that hernias occur in all regions, but the majority penetrate the fleshy portions, rather than the areas around the natural passageways or tendinous attachments. This finding agrees with a human study that indicated that most ruptures occur through weakened muscular areas rather than along the naturally occurring anatomical borders (21).…”

“…Left sided rupture occurs in 70%–80% cases, right sided rupture in 15%–24% cases, and bilateral in 5%–8% cases [8]. The greater prevalence of left sided rupture is due to buffer effect of the liver, embryonic weakness of left hemidiaphragm, and underdiagnosis of right diaphragmatic rupture [911]. Intrathoracic kidney is very rare and can occur in three possible situations like congenital DH, traumatic DH, or a congenital ectopic kidney.…”

“…The majority of diaphragmatic hernias occur on the left side. One study found that 75% of diaphragmatic hernias occur on the left side [7], while another study reports that as high as 88-95% of diaphragmatic ruptures occur are left-sided [8]. This is likely secondary to the relative protection of the right diaphragm by the liver [9][10][11][12].…”
