Runoff water quality characteristics in a small agriculture watershed

Abstract: I have observed the water quality in the Ohwada District of Kasumigaura Town near Lake Kasumigaura for a period of over seven years (1993)(1994)(1995)(1996)(1997)(1998)(1999). During this observation period, sampling was performed for 3 years at 4-h intervals using an automatic sampler, and the water quality was subsequently analyzed. As a result of this long-term precision study of water quality fluctuation, important new information was obtained. First, the quantity of nitrogen found to have been removed was… Show more

“…The mean concentrations of TN and TP in irrigation return flow were 2.5 and 0.17 mg L À1 , respectively, for a 7.4-ha rice paddy watershed in Japan (Feng et al, 2004). The mean concentrations of NO 3 -N and TP in streamwater during irrigation periods were reported to be 1.5 and 0.20 mg L À1 , respectively, for a 205-ha mixed land use watershed composed of 25% paddies in Japan (Nakasone, 2003). TN concentrations in streamwater in a mixed land use watershed that contained paddies in China seldom exceeded 2.0 mg L À1 from early July to late October (rice full growing season; Gao et al, 2004).…”

“…It also threatens sustainable agriculture (Karlen and Sharpley 1994). The problem of over-application is present in Japan (Nakasone et al 2002Nakasone 2003). Farmers apply large amounts of nitrogen fertilizer to vegetables such as lettuce, cabbage and celery.…”

“…In juvenile grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), elevated densities are associated with slowed growth, reduced immunity, and decreased antioxidant capacities [7]. Additionally, high density adversely impacts the growth and digestive enzyme activity of juvenile crayfish (Procambarus clarkii), eliciting notable alteration in the content of proteins, fats, glucose, and urea nitrogen in response to the escalated farming density [8].…”
