“…A calibrated water collection tank was used to measure the SRV, following standard measurements and protocols outlined by Jeje and Agu (1990) . The surface runoff from each plot was tapped into the 1000 L calibrated water collection tanks.…”

“…These variations might be due to mineral constituent of urban waste disposal and the sewage that are washed away into these gully sites. Jeje and Agu (1990) found that gully erosion affect exchangeable cations and characteristics, by low infiltration rate and very low holding capacity. The implication of this findings to biological control of gully erosion , is that increased in Na can have negative effects on the soil fertility and hence retard the growth of plants such as paniculatu/Pitadeniastrum africanum which are regarded as the most effective method of controlling gully erosion because of its affordability, accessibility and adaptability.…”

“…Multiple linear regression was used to relate runoff and soil loss with rainfall and vegetation parameters. This technique has already been shown to have strong predictive powers in soil erosion research (Stocking and Elwell, 1973;Jeje and Agu, 1990;Gardner et al, 1995;Eldridge and Kinnell, 1997). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to assess the significance of differences between mean runoff and mean soil loss from the different combinations of groundcover types investigated (plot types A, B and C).…”
