Rumor and gossip in interpersonal interaction and beyond: A social exchange perspective.

Abstract: Implicit in the notion that humans are social beings is the assumption that the giving and receiving of socially valued resources is essentially "wired into" human nature. However, humans are not totally rational animals, and thus it would be a mistake to think that a process akin to Bentham's (1 78111988) hedonic calculus is always operating in interpersonal relations.
