Rumen transfaunation

Abstract: The aim of this invited mini-review is to summarize the rumen transfaunation literature. Rumen transfaunation using the cud from a healthy donor animal to treat a sick recipient animal was practiced long before our understanding of rumen microorganisms. Around the mid-1900 s, scientists began to explore the benefits of rumen transfaunation and the associated microbial populations. Rumen transfaunation has been used clinically to treat indigestion and to enhance the return of normal rumen function following sur… Show more

“…9 Anecdotal reports of the use of parental feces to treat antibiotic-associated diarrhea in children had existed, but these cases were largely unknown until the publication of the first case series in 1958 of four patients with pseudomembranous enterocolitis by the American surgeon, Ben Eiseman. 10 For years, FMT remained a rarely used, if not forgotten, therapy.…”

“…Transplantation of rumen contents has been successfully used to clinically treat indigestion and return the rumen to its normal function, and to convert toxic compounds found in some plants to harmless or even beneficial compounds 20 . The exchange of ruminal contents from non-fasted to fasted lambs has also been suggested to accelerate repletion of the protozoal population after re-alimentation 21 .…”

“…The process involves transfer of cud (partially digested food from the first stomach) of a healthy donor animal to treat indigestion in a sick recipient animal. 74 In modern medicine, the first published research on the concept of FMT was by Eiseman et al 75 in 1958 and involved fecal enemas as an adjunctive treatment for antibiotic-induced pseudomembranous colitis. However, between 1958 and 2010, almost no reports have been published on this technique in the medical literature.…”
