Rule Based Coordinated Control of Domestic Combined Micro-CHP and Energy Storage System for Optimal Daily Cost

Abstract: This paper presents a novel control algorithm for optimising operational costs of a combined domestic micro-CHP (combined heat and power), battery and heat storage system. Using a minute by minute basic time-step, this work proposes a simple and computationally efficient rule based whole-system management, developed from empirical study of realistic simulated domestic electricity and heat loads. The CHP availability is considered in two binary states which, together with leveraging storage effectively, maximis… Show more

“…The main components of an ORC are a pump, an evaporator, a turbine, and a condenser (Figure 2a) [85,86]. The pump increases the pressure of the organic working fluid to the maximum value (1-2 process) then the evaporator is adopted to obtain the superheated vapour (2-3) that expands in the turbine (3)(4) to provide the mechanical work that is converted into electricity by an alternator. Finally, the working fluid is condensed (4-1).…”

“…Combined heat and power (CHP) generation presents several advantages in terms of lower costs, emissions, fuel consumption, and higher decentralised generation share as compared to conventional separate electric and thermal production [1][2][3]. During the last few years, the research community and the industry have been focusing increased attention on renewable sources, sustainability and global efficiency [4][5][6].…”

“…In common implementations, CHP systems are proposed for commercial and residential buildings for combined heat and electricity production [15,16]. In advanced applications, the combined operation of CHP systems with thermal energy storage have been studied [17] aiming at the minimization of the daily operation cost. Finally, by employing particular technologies, such as chilled ice or absorption chillers, the concept of tri-generation has been introduced, combining the production of heating, cooling and electricity [18][19][20].…”

“…In existing research of integrated energy systems, CHP has attracted attention widely for its outstanding advantages of high efficiency and low pollution. In Reference [4], a rule-based control algorithm was proposed to optimize the operational costs of domestic buildings with CHP installations. A novel approach using continuous time notation was applied to size a CHP unit with a hot water tank installation in Reference [5].…”
