Rugate filters by laser flash evaporation of SiOxNy on room-temperature polycarbonate

Abstract: A deposition system for laser flash evaporation was assembled and used to deposit onto polycarbonate SiOx Ny rugate filters with optical densities as high as 2.5 and bandwidths as low as 6.8% of the rejection wavelength.

“…Furthermore, RFs have substantially higher laser-induced damage thresholds with respect to Bragg mirrors (see, for example, [ 29 , 30 , 31 , 32 ]). There have been numerous methods developed for obtaining RFs [ 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 ]; for example, porous silicon-based RFs represent a popular approach [ 31 , 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 ].…”

“…The main difficulty raised by the fabrication of rugate filters lies in the necessary control of varying deposition rates for codeposition or of varying gas pressures for reactive deposition. In the case of codeposition, the varying deposition rate is generally controlled through the power fed to an evaporation source : the beam current for an electron beam evaporation system (4), the laser power in case of a laser flash evaporation (5,6). Such a varying rate control requires rather sophisticated feedback control systems and is still perfectible.…”
