Rudolph Otto's Idea of the Holy: A Reappraisal

Abstract: This paper explores the ambiguity in Rudolph Otto's discussion of the mysterium tremendum in order to address a broader set of difficulties in The Idea of the Holy (1917). In doing so, I outline two common criticisms of Otto's position. The first attacks Otto for not providing a secure transition from the numinous experience of terror to the holy experience of faith. “…The time following this period saw a decline in discussion of his work, but interest in these important ideas has never been fully lost. Use of and response to Otto's work has extended to the present time [See for example U. Rosenhagen, U. and G. Alles (2022) as well as Lauster, Schüz, Danz and Barth (2014), and even been at times divorced entirely from his theistic grounding (see Ware, 2007)].…”

“…It also encompasses phenomena simply deemed 'numinous' in some way [45]. That said, in Otto's original articulation of the numinous [46]-based on the Latin numen, meaning divine power or presence-this concept was generally interpreted in theistic terms [47]. There are many untranslatable terms in this space, including proper names (e.g., of deities).…”
