Regular Relaxation pulses in a Ruby LaserIt has been shown by experiments, that regular relaxation pulses are generated by moving the crystal of a ruby laser. The impulse width and the impulse frequency depend on the velocity of the crystal. Regelm/iBige Relaxationsschwingungen bei Lasern k6nnen mit verschiedenen Methoden erzielt werden [1-3]. Die Ursache des iiblichen Spiking ist nach Statz, Tang und deMars [4] in der rgumlichen Modulation der Besetzungsinversion zu suchen, die von der stehenden elektromagnetischen Welle produziert wird. Werden Mal3nahmen getroffen, die eine Modulation verhindern, so kann man regelmgBige Relaxationsimpulse erhalten. In [2] wird dies dadurch erreicht, dab eine groBe Anzahl von Moden in dem Resonator oszilliert. Bei unseren Experimenten mit einem beweglichen Kristall innerhalb eines ebenen Fabry-Perot-Resonators konnten wit bei verschiedenen Geschwindigkeiten regelm~il3ige Relaxationsimpulse beobachten. Im Gegensatz zu Free und Korpel [5], die den Kristall periodisch mit einem Piezoquarz bewegten und eine regul~ire Laseremission erhielten, konnte bei uns der Kristall mit konstanter Geschwindigkeit verschoben werden. Der Versuchsaufbau ist in Bild 1 dargestellt. Zwischen zwei festen Resonatorenspiegeln (R = 97 ~) ist der Laserkopf auf einer Doppelschiene beweglich angeordnet. Der Spiegelabstand und damit die Resonatorl~inge betrug bei den durchgef'tihrten Versuchen 36 cm. Der Laserkopf besteht aus einem zylinderelliptischen Reflektor und der Ziindeinrichtung. In dem Reflektor ist der Rubinkristall (Abmessung 2" lang, 1/4" Durchmesser, Dotierung 0.04~ Cr 3+, planparallele Enden) und eine Blitzlampe (XB 1516 Osram) untergebracht. Mit einer Vorrichtung, bestehend aus zwei Mikroschaltern und Zeitz/~hler, konnte die Geschwindigkeit des Kristalls gemessen werden. Mit einer anderen Vorrichtung wurde die Konstanz der Geschwindigkeit tiberpriift. Genauere Angaben iiber die einzelnen Details werden in [6] angegeben. 9 1970 Chapman and Hall Ltd
