Rubin Observatory LSST Stars Milky Way and Local Volume Star Clusters Roadmap

Christopher Usher,
Kristen C. Dage,
Léo Girardi
et al.

Abstract: The Vera C. Rubin Observatory will undertake the Legacy Survey of Space and Time, providing an unprecedented, volume-limited catalog of star clusters in the Southern Sky, including Galactic and extragalactic star clusters. The Star Clusters subgroup of the Stars, Milky Way and Local Volume Working Group has identified key areas where Rubin Observatory will enable significant progress in star cluster research. This roadmap represents our science cases and preparation for studies of all kinds of star clusters fr… Show more

“…Naturally, better modeling of the properties of the cluster central stellar distribution and of TDE light curves and rates are all needed to gain deeper insights into the presence of IMBHs in GCs. Large samples of extragalactic star clusters, like those that will be assembled by the Vera C. Rubin Observatory (Usher et al 2023), should enable significant progress in the search for TDEs in dense stellar systems. While there are considerable uncertainties in the modeling of TDE events in GCs, we hope that our pilot investigation will provide a blueprint for future searches of optical flares triggered by IMBHs.…”
