Rubella susceptibility in pregnant women and results of a postpartum immunization strategy in Catalonia, Spain

Abstract: .4-1.8) were more likely to be susceptible. The second dose of MMR vaccine was received by 57.2% (718/1256) of rubella-susceptible women, with the highest proportion being immigrant women compared with women born in Spain. After vaccination, all women showed rubella immunity. Conclusions:The higher rubella susceptibility found in the three youngest age groups and in immigrant women highlights the relevance of antenatal screening, in order to ensure identification and postpartum immunization. The postpartum imm… Show more

“…This finding is consistent with those from other local studies conducted in Italy, where the percentage of women of childbearing age at risk of rubella infection among those tested for rubella antibodies was found to vary from 11.7% to 17.8% among immigrant women [ 17 , 18 ] and estimated at 6.2% among Italian women [ 18 ]. This is also consistent with findings from the most recent studies conducted in other European countries, where rubella susceptibility was found to be 5.9% in Catalonia (Spain) and 6.3% in Liverpool (UK) [ 19 , 32 ], with higher rates observed in immigrant women [ 19 21 ].…”

“…Recent immigrants are likely to be less informed about screening opportunities and, when coming from countries where rubella screening is not routinely implemented, they are also likely to have been less exposed to rubella immunization compared with long-term immigrants. Differences by geographical area of origin are in line with findings from Spain [ 19 ], United Kingdom [ 21 ], and the Sicily region of Italy [ 17 ], where decreased RIRs were observed in immigrant women from Africa and Asia. In general, our results are also consistent with findings from other European studies that compared RIR between immigrant children and adolescents and same-age national peers, all showing reduced immunization rates in immigrants [ 13 – 16 ].…”

“…16 These strategies have been introduced into regular obstetrics care and have shown good performance in the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and other countries. [17][18][19] Therefore, to eliminate rubella infection, the postpartum immunization should be launched and vaccination should be provided to the susceptible women, either native or immigrant, before they are discharged from hospitals. 20 In Taiwan, almost all women have prenatal checkups.…”
