Research on the application of 3D visualization and virtual reality (VR) in discrete-event simulation (DES) has received increased attention in the past two decades. The increasing popularity of the 3D display in DES is mainly due to superior display capabilities and the associated benefits that it offers. However, the 2D display also continues to enjoy active use to date, thus provoking some fierce debates questioning the need for the 3D and VR if the 2D interface suffices. Several studies comparing the effectiveness of the different visualization methods also produce different conclusions. This paper undertakes a meta-analysis of the different positions and synthesizes the findings from 162 studies on the impacts of the 2D display versus 3D/VR on user performance on various DES tasks. The results highlight four key findings. First, the perception that the 2D display is more effective for model development is misleading as 3D/VR offers overall better performance and quality of models. Second, 3D/VR enables more effective performance than 2D display for model verification and validation. Third, 3D/VR decreases the time taken for verification, validation, experimentation, and analysis of results, but can increase model development time. Finally, the latent variables such as the application domains and nature of the problems tackled have no direct or indirect influence on the efficacy of the 3D display/VR versus 2D on DES task performance.

a b s t r a c tIn recent years, new services on the Internet have enabled global cooperation; in particular, the Web has enabled new distributed simulation technology. Much research has been devoted to develop middleware interoperability methods on the Web. However, most existing methods have constraints in the structural rules that are placed on the design of middleware interoperability methods. For example, such constraints make it difficult to enhance interoperability via decoupling systems implementations and design, which is essential in open computing networks, as in the case of the Web. In order to achieve such objectives we present the RISE (RESTful Interoperability Simulation Environment) middleware. This all-purpose WS-based distributed simulation middleware decouples design and implementation while allowing composition scalability and dynamicity. Furthermore, it supports experiment-oriented frameworks and has the ability to put Web 2.0 services in the simulation loop. RISE is the first existing middleware to achieve such objectives, and the first to employ RESTful Web-services. We present the foundations for meeting the above objectives, and the distinct characteristics of RISE from existing Web-based approaches.

We introduce advanced graphical modeling and visualization facilities for Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) modeling and simulation (M&S) in the CD++ environment. The objective is to provide general users with a variety of easy-to-use environments to facilitate the model analysis process and thereby promoting the adoption of M&S by a wider community of practitioners and researchers. CD++Modeler allows users without much experience in software development to construct rather complex DEVS models and to analyze simulation data using 2D graphics. We also introduce a graphical platform called MAPS designed specifically for urban traffic systems, and other advanced 3D animation tools (CD++/VRML, CD++/Maya, CD++DEVSView, and CD++/Blender) based on both commercial and open-source software packages. We elaborate on the design of these toolkits and demonstrate their capabilities as well as relative merits and limitations with realistic applications. Following a highly modular approach, the resulting architecture can be easily extended to incorporate other modeling and visualization techniques in future development. We show that these facilities can reduce the model development cost significantly, lower the learning curve for general users, and improve the comprehension of continuously evolving models, making them suitable for efficient decision making.
