RTMS may be a good choice for pregnant women with depression

Abstract: Due to the possible adverse effects on fetus, the treatment of pregnant women with depression is a difficult problem in the field of psychiatry. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) was used to treat three pregnant women with depression in the early pregnancy. “…This group found a trend for Folic Acid (FA) and Multivitamins (MVA) protecting against AD, but the relationship was not statistically significant. Finally, Zhang and Hu32 most recently presented a case study of 3 pregnant women who were successfully treated for AD using Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Simulation (rTMS). In this case report, however, the authors do not make clear how they assessed improvement in AD.…”

“…There are currently 6 published case reports of TMS for the treatment of major depression during pregnancy (Klirova et al, 2008; Zhang and Hu, 2009; Nahas et al, 1999). In all cases, TMS was safe and effective for the treatment of depression during pregnancy, although there is no long-term data published on children born to mothers exposed to TMS.…”
