RPI-AM and RPI-AF, a pair of mesh-based, size-adjustable adult male and female computational phantoms using ICRP-89 parameters and their calculations for organ doses from monoenergetic photon beams

Abstract: This paper describes the development of a pair of adult male and adult female computational phantoms that are compatible with anatomical parameters for the 50th percentile population as specified by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). The phantoms were designed entirely using polygonal mesh surfaces-a Boundary REPresentation (BREP) geometry that affords the ability to efficiently deform the shape and size of individual organs, as well as the body posture. A set of surface mesh model… Show more

“…Two new phantoms, RPI sitting phantoms, were constructed from a pair of standing phantoms called RPI-adult male (AM) and RPI-adult female (AF) developed recently by the group here (6) . RPI-AM and AF were designed using data recommended in ICRP Publications 23 and 89 (4,5) for reference adult males and females (4 -6) .…”

“…A scalar multiplication method was developed to deform the body surface and organs into the sitting posture (6) . The volume change in the deformed organ mesh models would maintain agreement within 1 % with ICRP recommended reference values.…”

“…Many researchers (Cassola et al 2010;ICRP 2009;Lee et al 2010;Zhang et al 2009) have implemented the 2002 reference man specification by creating computational phantoms with matching body height, body mass, and organ masses. The main application for those phantoms is the calculation of organ absorbed dose fractions for internal and external radiation sources.…”
